i actually have a sustain button on my keyboard now and i absolutely love it..i cant play without it. it sounds so beautiful. it sustains it jsut long enough so that it never sounds mushed together. with the pedal you have to constantly press it up and down which is tedious, though i love to do that with my piano, just not with a keyboard. plus pedals are like 30$ extra.

I would guess it would depend upon the Yamaha keyboard itself – my old one had a ‘sustain’ button also, but I’ve noticed the trend toward the foot pedal. The pedal is probably better as it frees your hands to focus on the notes rather than on the sustain feature. What do you think of Korg keyboards? (I’m looking to get ‘best answer’ so let me know if I can help you further.)

The problem with sustain buttons is that it is hard to control the sustain – you end up with a lot of mush with notes running into each other.
